Bhubaneswar: The Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Bulbul’ which is about 390 km south-southeast of Paradip is moving north-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph for the past six hours. Light to moderate rainfall at most places very likely over north coastal districts of the State with heavy winds was predicted in the latest bulletin by the Regional Meteorological Department.
It is very likely to intensify further till the early morning of 9th November and move nearly northwards before making landfall on West Bengal coasts.
Coming to rainfall predictions, light to moderate rainfall at most places very likely over north coastal districts with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Puri, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Jagatsinghpur districts will be experienced today. Light to moderate rainfall at most places very likely over north coastal districts of Odisha with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts and heavy falls at isolated places over Mayurbhanj and Jajpur districts on November 9, i.e. tomorrow.
Issuing wind speed warnings the bulletin said, strong wind speed reaching 35– 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph prevails along and off the Odisha coast. It is very likely to increase becoming squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph by the afternoon of 8th along and off Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore and Bhadrak districts. Gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph very likely from around noon of November 9 along & off Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Balasore, and Bhadrak districts for subsequent 12 hours and decrease thereafter. Puri and Ganjam districts are likely to experience squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph from the afternoon of November 8 for the subsequent 24 hours.
* Total suspension of fishing operations from 8th onwards over Odisha-West Bengal coasts.
*Fishermen are advised not to venture into west-central & adjoining the northwest Bay of Bengal during November 8 and 9 and over North Bay of Bengal during November 9 and 10.
* Fishermen are advised not to venture into northwest Bay of Bengal along & off Odisha –
West Bengal coasts from 8th to 10th November.
Damage Expected over coastal districts of north Odisha:
* Damage to thatched houses/ huts. Unattached metal sheets may fly.
*Damage to embankments/ salt pans.
*Partial damage to power and communication lines.
*Major damage to Kutcha and some damage to Pucca roads. Flooding of escape routes.
*Breaking of tree branches, uprooting of trees. Damage to banana and papaya trees. Large dead limbs blown from trees.
* Major damage to coastal crops
Action suggested for coastal districts of north Odisha
* Total suspension of fishing operations from 8th November onwards.
* People in affected areas to remain indoors.
* Movement in motorboats is unsafe.
* Beach movement to be restricted.
