Cuttack: A week after a man’s death in daylight firing by a miscreant near Godisahi Netal chhak under Barang police limits, the mystery behind the incident has been solved.

The deceased person identified as Sunil Ranjan Sahoo, hostel supervisor of Sri Sri University had been shot dead on November 25.

The accused identified as Niranjan Behera (25) of Cuttack was arrested today. A scooty bearing registration number ‘OD 05 AD 7570’, a 9 mm pistol, two empty magazines, one cartridge case, one helmet and a mobile phone has been seized from his possession.

After the incident on November 25, Baranga police station registered on the report of Subedar Yadav, Assistant Security Officer of Sri Sri University. During investigation it came to light that the deceased Sahoo had developed intimacy with a woman. He pursued their relationship, while she resented it. After being annoyed, she shared her feelings with one Niranjan Behera, her old school mate and told her about the physical advances and other forms for mental torture by Sahoo.

Hence, Niranjan decided to kill Sahoo out of vengeance. He went to Munger in Bihar and procured one 9 mm Pistol, two magazines and three bullets. On November 25, he waited near Sri Sri University for Sahoo. As Behera was previously known to Sahoo as a friend of that lady, Sahoo stopped and parked his bike on the roadside to talk to him.

As Behera had pre-determined to kill Sahoo, he suddenly fired two rounds of bullets aiming at Sahoo, one on the chest and another on the head. Then he fled the spot in his scooty towards Bidyadharpur. On the way he concealed the weapon of offence in a bush and went away towards Dhenkanal.

Behera was arrested today from his house. During interrogation he confessed to have committed murder of the deceased and gave recovery of the weapon of offence from the place of concealment.
