Bhubaneswar: Senior Congressmen have expressed their disgust over the fracas that happened at the Congress Bhawan-the grand old party's state headquarters here on Friday.
Congressmen have termed the incident as unacceptable and have demanded strong action against those responsible for the incident and their sponsors.
"I will never appreciate any person, any youth, any muscleman creating disturbance at Congress Bhawan. It was not proper. If anybody had any grievance they could have met our party's Odisha in-charge Jitendra Singh personally and discussed the matter with him," said senior Congress leader and Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati in his reactions to the media over Friday's incident.
"The way all that happened yesterday will not be appreciated by the people. It doesn't augur well for Congress. Strong action should be taken against them and their sponsors," he added.
Veteran Congressman and Jatni MLA Suresh Routray was also not happy with what happened on Friday at Congress Bhawan.
"This should not have happened. Congress is a party of 140 years. We have a strong organisation. We will just not tolerate any goon running this party. In my opinion, whatever happened yesterday was not proper. I appeal to the people and our leaders to resolve the matter within the organisation," said Routray.
Fissures within the grand old party came out in the open when suspended NSUI state convenor Itish Pradhan and his supporters staged a dharna in front of the party's headquarters after being heckled and denied entry to meet Jitendra Singh at the Congress Bhawan.
The incident took place while the party's leaders in Singh's presence were brainstorming to revive the eroded fortunes of the party.
If sources are to be believed private security men (read bouncers) were engaged so that the dissidents stayed away from disturbing the meeting.
Pradhan along with hundreds of his supporters had come to meet Singh to protest against his suspension from the party for his alleged outbursts against Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik.
However, he was allegedly prevented from meeting Singh by the private security personnel following which they staged the dharna.
