Rourkela: Commuters on either side of the Brahmani bridge here were panic-struck after a concrete slab of the bridge caved in this morning.
Sources said vehicular traffic came to grinding halt as commuters remained stranded on either side of the bridge.
Eyewitnesses said vehicles remained stranded up to about four kilometers on either side of National Highway no. 143.
On being informed National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) authorities rushed to the spot. After taking stock, NHAI authorities have cordoned off the area and have sealed the damaged portion of the bridge with iron plates to prevent any mishap.
While repair works are underway, one platoon policemen have been deployed by the administration for ensuring smooth traffic movement over the bridge.
It will be worthwhile to mention here that as the existing decades-old bridge is in a deplorable state, following persistent public demand Union Minister of Transport and Roadways Nitin Gadkari had laid foundation stone for a second bridge over Brahmani river in 2017. However, there has been no noticeable progress in the construction of the second bridge.
