Bhubaneswar: Fun and fervour marked Christmas celebration in the Capital City which wore a bridal look with churches, schools, commercial establishments and houses decorated with colourful lights and stars. Bhubaneswar is home to over 10,000 Christians who are celebrating the festival with pomp and enthusiasm in Satya Nagar, Unit IV, Nayapalli, Chandrasekharpur and Khandagiri locality where a majority of the Christians reside.
Candles, stars, decorative lights, traditional Christmas trees, varieties of Santa Claus caps and baked delicacies were part of the celebrations. The main celebration was held at Roman Catholic Church at Satya Nagar square and Union Church at Unit IV area of the city on Tuesday. Service prayers were also offered at half-a-dozen other churches which were decked up to commemorate the birth of Lord Jesus. Recital of Bible and carols reverberated across the Christian-dominated localities of the city.
“Christmas is the time when the offices, markets, and shops are all decked up in shades of red, white and Christmas trees adorning every corner. One of the biggest celebrated festivals for Christians around the world, it has now moved on to be celebrated by people from other religions too and perhaps, remains to be one of the most exciting festivals for the little ones, who are spoiled by gifts and treats,” Siddharth Sahu a senior member of the Union Church said.
Jesus came down as the Messiah to rescue people from the dangers of the 'original sin' and showered health, happiness, and joy in the world. “Hence, it is believed that the true gift of Christmas is Jesus Christ, the son of God who willingly gave his life to save us from sin and eternal punishment. We are blessed and happy with this gift that God has given us,” a devout Christian woman said.
