Paradip: In a freak accident, a mobile phone exploded and killed a labourer while he was using it at Atharbanki here on early Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Kuna Pradhan who hails from Lembudi village in Nayagarh and worked as a labourer at Paradip. He housed with a few others at rooms above the Jagannath Truck Owners’ Association office.

Reports suggest that Kuna was surfing his cell phone last night when it blew up. He had kept the phone on his chest when the blast killed him instantly.

However, his associates said that they were not aware of the incident until the blast put Kuna’s bed on fire. They woke to find the room engulfed in smoke. Calling others for help, they extinguished the fire and rescued Kuna but were not able to save him.

A case was registered at Paradip Adarsh Police station. The Police with a forensic team has inspected the scene. A probe is underway.
