BMC Distributes Odisha CM’s Special Assistance To 23,000 Cyclone Victims

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in one of its biggest relief operations ever, started distributing the Chief Minister’s Special Assistance for victims of very severe cyclonic storm FANI, which hit the city with a wind speed of more than 200 km per hour on May 3.

The relief distribution of Rs 2,000 as distress assistance and Rs 500 for purchasing polythene sheets to each beneficiary is being conducted in all 66 wards across the city. On the first day of special package distribution, more than 23,000 persons collected the financial assistance from the State Government, which was facilitiated by the BMC.

The civic body started the pilot distribution of the relief in five wards of the city yesterday. The pilot wards were 15, 22, 23, 24 and 49. Today in all centres across 67 wards huge congregation of beneficiaries was seen as they lined up to receive the compensation from the government.

The entire operation is being carried out with deployment of adequate police force for smooth running of the operation. While cops were deployed for each centre, sector officer and a section each under each PS for the operation, six zonal ACPs are overseeing the work and one additional DCP has been deployed to monitor the process. 

The assistance will be distributed to 1,04,814 beneficiaries coming under National Food Security Act (NFSA). An eligible beneficiary has to produce the ration card to avail the relief and the respective ward officers are monitoring the activity under the supervision of sector officers of the city as it has been divided into 13 sectors for smooth conduct of the relief and rehabilitation operations in the city following the aftermath of the huge natural calamity.

Sources said the civic body has geared up to execute the huge task as more than Rs 25.5 crore will be distributed through the city-wide process to help the needy in distress.
