Bhubaneswar: Director General of Fire Services BK Sharma on Monday assumed office as the new DGP-in-charge of Odisha, after incumbent DGP RP Sharma went on leave following his wife Tushar Sharma’s untimely death.

BK Sharma, a 1986-batch IPS officer, has also served as the Commissioner of Police of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack from May 2008 to May 2012. His name as the new DGP-in-charge was picked by the Election Commission of India from among three DGP rank officers.

After assuming office Sharma said, the major concern for him now is to conduct a free and fair election as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India.

The first phase election to start on April 11 is a major challenge for the police keeping in view the induction and de-induction of forces in remote and Naxal-infested areas for conduct of safe election, he added.

Police is alert to tackle law and order situation at various places during the election. Many seizures have been reported during checkings, which will be intensified in coming days. Police can adopt a major role to check illegal money circulation during the elections, said Sharma.

It has been nearly one-month Odisha Police has started taking action against anti-socials and has arrested many such elements. A preventive blanket has already been prepared which will be intensified during elections and rural areas will be under police scanner, he added.

It is worthwhile to mention that BK Sharma's name had also been included in the list of five IPS officers recommended for the post of Odisha DGP in 2017, when he was serving as the Special DGP Crime Branch (CID).
