Bhubaneswar: BJD supremo and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today came down heavily on BJP at the Centre claiming that the saffron party went back upon its promise of 2014 election to grant Special Category Status to Odisha for which the people will give a beftting reply in the 2019 elections.

The regional satrap said this while addressing his party workers at the ongoing Jansampark Padayatra here in the capital city.

Naveen Patnaik said, “You all know that BJD-BJP alliance had formed government in Odisha from 2000 to 2009. We had fought together to get special status category for Odisha. Special Category Status for Odisha was the No 1 agenda of BJP’s manifesto in 2014 elections. I was extremely elated to notice this.”

“I had hoped that people of Odisha would get justice from the Special Category Status. Had also hoped that Odisha would get tax rebate, there would be flow of many industries and also would increase employment opportunities. But now in many Central schemes, 50:50 share is being paid,” he stated.

He argued, “Had there been Special Category Status, this contribution would be 90:10. Following this, the infrastructural development of education, health and other developmental activities would pace up. More funds could be expended by the State Government. But, it is unfortunate to note that BJP forgot its promise after coming to power. The hope of the people of Odisha remained unfulfilled.”

He further stated, “You all know that Odisha faces natural calamity every year and this has resulted in loss of many lives and ample property. Isn’t a strong ground for getting Special Category Status?”

“The people of Odisha will remind up BJP of this 2014’s promise in 2019. Special Category Status is our right. We’ll keep on fighting for this,” the Odisha Chief Minister thundered.

On the contrary, BJP national secretary Suresh Pujari countered, “The Chief Minister should demand to amend the existing law. His party has 20 Lok Sabha members. They could have moved proposal for the amendment. The demand should have been that despite not being border state, a poor state should also be accorded special category status.”

“The Chief Minister as well as his party BJD has no keen interest in the Special Category Status or the development of the State. The Chief Minister is now exercising all sorts failed attempts to win the elections,” the BJP leader remarked.

However, senior Congress leader and Odisha Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra reacted, “BJP party has already admitted that it always believes in ‘jumla’. Their party minister Gadkari has on record said that they have won 2014 elections by giving false promises to the people. The party that has already confessed that it is a party of liars, commenting on its comment is stupidity.”

“Whatever had been promised in the manifesto of BJD and BJP or whatever stated in the Assembly has not been fulfilled,” he quipped.
