Bhubaneswar: Close on the heels of BJP’s Odisha poster boy-cum-Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s tall promise of providing rice, dal and salt at Re 1 to the poor people if voted to power in Odisha, BJD today pooh-poohed BJP’s such an eleventh hour stance.

Convening a press meet today, BJD spokesperson Amar Patnaik reacted, “On April 13, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has stated at Choudwar that if they form government, they will provide 5 kg of rice, 500 grm dal and 500 grm salt at Re 1. The statement that he gave was when he observed Phase-I polling on April 11. On that day’s polling, the Hon’ble Minister and his party knew well about the mandate of the people of Odisha.”

“It was also well-known to them that the peopl’e mandate is not only against the BJP, but also like most Naveen Patnaik, positive voting. By observing this he might have resorted to this tactic,” he remarked.

Citing instances from the BJP’s 2014 manifesto, the BJD spokesperson argued, “The No 1 point in that manifesto was to accord special category status to Odisha while that line misses from BJP’s 2019 manifesto. BJP thinks whatever statement and promise they made during election, the people of Odisha will believe in it and give their mandate but the people of Odisha already know well.”

On the BJP’s latest nine resolutions for new Odisha, he further argued, “They have promised to spend Rs 1 lakh thousand crore on irrigation. The BJP Government’s expenditure for irrigation in entire India is Rs 25,000 crore, but have promised such a hefty amount for Odisha. This exhibits the level of lie told by them.”
