Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal on Friday announced its candidates for the Rajya Sabha election which is scheduled to be held on July 5.

Chief Minister and BJD Supremo Naveen Patnaik announced the names of Amar Patnaik and Sasmit Patra as the party's nominees for the Upper House of the Parliament.

On the other hand, the BJP has nominated former bureaucrat Ashwini Baishnab as its Rajya Sabha candidate.

While announcing the party’s candidates for the Rajya Sabha, Naveen added that the BJD will support Baishnab’s nomination from Odisha.

Patnaik, a former Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS) officer is the IT Cell Head of the BJD. Sasmit Patra is the party's spokesperson and secretary of BJD's Minority Cell.

Baishnab, a former Odisha-cadre IAS officer had served in the PMO as a Deputy Secretary when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. He also served as the Collector of Cuttack.

Four Rajya Sabha seats from Odisha were lying vacant after Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, Achyuta Samanta, Anubhav Mohanty and Pratap Deb resigned following their victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
