Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) today once again knocked the doors of the Election Commission through the Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) complaining no action till date against BJP’s surrogate advertisements as well as Doordarshan regional news allegedly being misused as paid news at the behest of BJP-led Central Government.

Soon after lodging the complaints, BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra told media, “Today our party had come to submit two specific petitions/complaints with the Chief Electoral Officer as well as the Election Commission.”

He elucidated, “First of all, when model code of conduct was enforced on March 11, 2019, it was found that lots of hoardings of the Central Government, especially, that of the Petroleum & Natural Gas, were surrogate advertisements. Many hoardings are still advertising the policies and schemes of the Central Government. Neither those hoardings have been withdrawn from the public places or from the railway stations or from the airports.”

“Despite our complaint filed on March 11, no strict action has been taken against it even though nine days have elapsed,” the BJD spokesperson complained.

He stated, “Our demand is that action should be taken soon as model code of conduct is being violated. All those hoardings and signages should be immediately withdrawn.”

He also informed, “Secondly, we all know that Doordarshan is the television channel of the Central Government. For the last few days it has been watched that Doordarshan has blacked out the programmes of Biju Janata Dal, especially in their news bulletins.”

“Doordarshan is being run by the money of taxpayers. It isn’t a private agency. While Doordarshan has blacked out BJD’s programmes, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s programmes are being highlighted immensely. Hence, today we demanded that the Chief Electoral Officer should examine the 7.00-7.30 pm news bulletin aired and the scripts. Also the video footages of the half an hour news bulletin should also be probed into. Doordarshan is aiding the BJP as paid news,” the BJD spokesperson demanded.

On the contrary, BJP's counter reactions to BJD's complaints were not available despite efforts by OMMCOM NEWS till the filing of this news.
