BJD Complains Against BJP’s EC Guidelines Violations In ‘Poll Silence Period’, Demands Strict Action

Bhubaneswar: BJD today moved the Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) complaining against the alleged violations of Election Commission Guidelines by BJP MP candidate Baijayant Panda and senior leader Samir Mohanty by giving media byte as well as convening press meet respectively despite the ‘silence period’ prescribed by the Commission.

The two separate petitions were filed with the CEO complaining against Panda and Mohanty.

As per the complaint against Baijayant Panda, “It is shocking to note that BJP leader Baijayant Panda has given a media byte which construes as an interview in the electoral process. Further, OTV has telecasted this today (April 11) between 1.40 pm to 1.49 pm.”

Against BJP leader Samir Mohanty, the BJD petition mentions, “It is shocking to note that BJP and its leader Samir Mohanty has given a Press Meet today (April 11) afternoon. Further, OTV has been scrolling the content of this Press Meet continuously from 2 pm onwards.”

Both the petitions refer, “As per letter No. 3/ER/2018/SDR/VOL-1 dated 15th March, 2019 by Shri. N.T.Bhutia, Secretary, Election Commission to all recognized State Parties, a copy of which is enclosed, in SI. No. 4 of the said letter it is stated that “during the silence period, star campaigners and other Political Leaders should refrain from addressing the media by way of press conferences and giving interviews on election matters."

“We demand that strict and immediate action be taken against the BJP and its leader as well as OTV for the above mentioned violations. We look forward to your immediate intervention in this regard,” the two petitions urged the Odisha CEO.

On the contrary, counter reactions of BJP leaders Baijayant Panda, Samir Mohanty and OTV were not available till the filing of this news.
