Bhubaneswar: Biju Janta Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik met the newly-elected Bijepur Member of Legislative Assembly-elect (MLA-elect) Rita Sahu at his official residence Naveen Niwas on Friday.

Sahu registered a landslide win in Bijepur by-polls whose results were declared yesterday. She won with a record margin of 97,994 votes at the end of 21 rounds. BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik had congratulated Sahu for her huge historic win over telephone.

The new MLA-elect thanked Chief Minister Naveen for trusting her with Bijepur and the Bijepur locals for showering their love on her. She said, “I will work towards the development of my constituency with special importance to Gangadhar irrigation project. In my tenure, I will try to work towards the betterment of roads and  hospitals and empowerment of women.”

The by-poll for Bijepur Assembly was necessitated as CM Naveen Patnaik who won Hinjili, his traditional seat and Bijepur, later vacated the Bijepur and retained Hinjili assembly seat. Sahu had won the byelection in February last year as well after the demise of her husband and sitting Congress MLA Subal Sahu.
