Bhubaneswar: Reviewing the present situation of the telecom network hit hard in Puri and other coastal districts by the ravaging Cyclone FANI recently, the Union Telecommunication Additional Secretary today claimed that network has been restored nearly 80% barring Puri district and was optimistic that Odisha would be witnessing normalcy soon.

Briefing media soon after the high level review meeting at the State Secretariat here today, Union Telecommunication Additional Secretary Anshu Prakash said, “The telecom infrastructure was extensively damaged. But I’m happy that all the telecom companies, including BSNL, Airtel, Voda, Idea, and the infrastructure provider tower companies, two of them the American ATC and Bharti Infratel, under leadership of DoT and in close coordination with the State Government rose to the occasion and on war-footing this effort of restoration has been taken.”

He added, “As you are aware, everyday this was being reviewed at the level of Cabinet Secretary, and at the State Government’s level here was the Development Commissioner reviewing. We are said DG, Telecom from Delhi along with the senior DDG were camping here. Today the situation is that in all the districts, barring three, the telecom infrastructure has been nearly fully restored. Now we are focusing on Puri where the damage was most expansive. Also in Khurda, in Cuttack and little bit in Jagatsinghpur.”

He informed, “Barring Puri, the telecom network is nearly at 80% restored, it’s functional. We’ll see that in Puri district also the restoration is complete and network become normal. I would also like to share that during this period free SMS services were permitted. More than two crores free SMSes have been sent. We also permitted free intra-circle roaming, that means any person in any connection can use whichever network is available, and more than 10 lakh calls have been made intra-circle roaming.”

He further informed, “Today with the Chief Secretary and the Development Commissioner, and Secretary, Telecom & Secretary, Power we have reviewed the situation. For landline exchanges also we will be restoring them very fast and barring partly in Khurda and partly in Puri, all landline exchanges have been restored.”
