Bhubaneswar: The two Odia players, Amit Rohidas and Birendra Lakra, have been selected in the 18-member squad of Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018 because they deserve it, said Chief Coach Harendra Singh today.

Addressing media persons, Harendra said, "First I congratulate the 18 players as they have worked hard to get in the World Cup team. I reiterate that the team has been selected on present performance and fitness of the players and it is a balanced team of experienced and young players."

On being asked about experienced Rupinder Pal Singh and S V Sunil missing out from the team and replaced by junior players, Harendra said the moment a player enters the national camp he is equally good to represent the country. Representing the country is the paramount; it is not who has put how many years of service and who has arrived for the first time.

Harendra further said the Indian team playing on its home ground is not tough but a moment to enjoy because not many players have the opportunity to play before their home crowd. India is hosting the World Cup for the third time therefore the Indian players are fortunate to showcase their skills and it is a benefit for them to play before their home crowd.

Odisha’s experienced defender Birendra Lakra, who makes a comeback into the team after missing out the Hero Asian Champions Trophy in Muscat last month due to rehabilitation, said he is happy to secure a place in the squad of the World Cup as it was very difficult for him after the injury during the Asian Games. He had to struggle very hard for one month during his rehabilitation.

"It will be a memorable World Cup for me as it will be held in my home ground and I will try to give my best performance here for years to remember. The World Cup is being organised in Bhubaneswar with full support of Odisha Government. I hope various other games including Hockey will get similar support in future." said Birendra.

Amit Rohidas expressing his contentment of two Odisa players being selected in the team and performing before his home crowd said, "I had represented Kalinga Lancers at the Hockey India League (HIL) held here and has enjoyed support of the crowd."

With just over a fortnight left for commencement of the World Cup, the State Capital denizens are waiting with bated breath for the sporting extravaganza and Commissionerate of Police is already on its toes for security of the international event. Besides, hockey mascot Olly is touring the State to encourage people to participate in large numbers and make the occasion a grand success.
