Rourkela: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced that all the 17 blocks of Sundergarh district will have astro turfs for development and promotion of the sport.

Addressing a meeting here today, Naveen said, as a legacy of the World Cup and in recognition of Sundergarh district's contribution towards Hokcey, the State Government will establish astro turfs in all blocks.

"Probably Sundergarh will be the only district with largest number of astro turfs in the country. And will continue to produce world class players who will play for the country," Naveen added.

The Odisha Government has been focussing on development of Sports especially Hockey which is close to the hearts of the people of Sundergarh. Odisha has organised international hockey tournaments like Champions Trophy and Hockey World League Final, said Naveen.

"We are the only State which has its own Hockey Team - Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League, which won the Championship in the last edition. We are the only State which sponsors a National team. Odisha is sponsoring the Hockey National teams for next 5 years," the Chief Minister added.

Naveen inaugurated the second exhibition match between New South Wales (Australia) XI and Odisha XI at Biju Patnaik Hockey Stadium in Sector-5 of the Steel City. New South Wales won the match which ended at a score of 3-2.

“Our boys and girls are playing exceedingly well in the National Temas and we hope to further strengthen the game in Odisha. We already have sports hostels with focus on Hockey. Now we are going to establish a High Performance Centre for Hockey in Bhubaneswar shortly. We will also strengthen the Hockey coaching in Rourkela,” Naveen said.

The CM inaugurated a slew of development projects which included smart city initiatives at a programme held at the Udit Nagar high school ground, before flying back to Bhubaneswar.
