AIIMS Bhubaneswar Director Debunks Rumours Regarding 2nd COVID-19 Patient

21 March 2020

Bhubaneswar: Debunking rumours regarding hiding the travel history details of the second COVID-19 positive patient AIIMS Director Dr Gitanjali Batmanabane said that the patient, his family and the hospital have followed all the necessary protocols and acted responsibly.

After the test results came back positive on March 19, there were reports in several media publications that the patient’s father who is posted as Medical Superintendent at AIIMS hid his son’s travel details and was in contact with several people. The reports also said that they delayed the test and hence increased the chances of community transmission of coronavirus.

Speaking on the matter at hand the AIIMS Director said, “The patient came to us on the morning of March 19 showing symptoms similar to COVID-19. He was kept in isolation and samples sent for testing. After his reports came back positive, he was given the necessary treatment. All of his primary contacts were advised home isolation. All measures were taken on the institute campus as per the World Health Organisation protocol and advisories issued by the Centre and State Government.”

She added that she was saddened to hear that landlords were not letting doctors employed at AIIMS inside their houses; which is uncalled for in the current scenario.

Notably, Odisha Government-appointed Chief Spokesperson on COVID-19 Subroto Bagchi had already clarified that the patient landed on March 18 and was in the hospital on March 19 morning for testing. He has also repeatedly urged everyone to treat coronavirus patients/suspects and their family members with dignity and compassion.
