Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal will launch a mass membership drive across the State which will continue for one month. At the extended executive meeting here on Sunday, BJD president Naveen Patnaik said that the membership drive will start on September 2 and end on October 31.

Naveen held discussions with all members of the executive committee, MLAs, MPs, state functionaries, president of party’s frontal organisations, district unit presidents and observers. In a bid to improve its organisational strength the party has set a target to enrol 50 lakh members during the drive.

Naveen sought active participation of the leaders in the membership drive of the party. He also advised the leaders to work with various institutions for promoting the philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi, and intensify ‘JeebanaBindu’, a blood donation campaign of the party.

Naveen also thanked the people of Odisha and members of the BJD for electing him for the fifth time to lead the State. On May 3 this year, Naveen had urged the Centre to include 'Ahimsa' in the Preamble to the Indian Constitution which would a befitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary.

"This was one of the two issues which Naveen Patnaik has raised in National interest and these have been accepted by all parties. The other issue raised by our leader was reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies," BJD vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra said.

Mishra has been appointed as the Convener of the membership committee in which six members will be present. The members of the Membership Committee will train district level workers for inducting new members in the party. Naveen will be launching the drive from Bhubaneswar on Monday.
