Bhubaneswar: After the Odisha Government decided to withdraw cases against Delhi-based journalist Abhijit Iyer Mitra, eminent BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy lauded the decision. Taking to his twitter handle, he elucidated that though the CJI had rebuked Iyer’s advocate, the withdrawal of cases against him was due to to the large heart of CM Patnaik and the Odisha Assembly sagacity. Abhijit should learn that four letter foul works is not culture.
The withdrawal of cases against Abhijit and that too after the CJI had rebuked his advocate that Abhijit is safe in jail, is due to the large heart of CM Patnaik and the Odisha Assembly sagacity. He also appreciated the whole-hearted dedication of his advocate Nikhil Mehra, who according to him, went beyond his call of duty to argue and file petitions for him.
In Abhijit matter let us also appreciate the dedication of his Advocate Nikhil Mehra. He went beyond his call of duty to argue and file Petitions for him. His dedication was impressive— Subramanian Swamy (@Swamy39) December 4, 2018
Notably, Mitra was arrested on 23 October after he posted a video on his Twitter handle, criticizing Odisha, Lord Jagannath, Konark temple and Odisha lawmakers. These remarks had hurt the sentiments of people across the State. Besides, he had also cast unparliamentary remarks on Odisha MLAs for which a breach of privilege was initiated in the Assembly against him.
Iyer had appealed to the Government to consider his unconditional apology in having hurt sentiments of Odisha unintentionally "without haing malice or mal-intent".
The Odisha Legislative Assembly House Committee had accepted his apology and exonerated him of the charges on November 16.
Today, the Home Department issued a notification which stated, "Taking into account his representation, the Government has decided not to accord sanction of prosecution in cases where prosecution has been sought for and also decided to withdraw other cases pending against him following laid-down procedures."
