The World Friendship Crusade proposed July 30, 1958 as the first Friendship Day, and the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2011 declared this date as the official day of celebrations. However in India, it is celebrated on the first Sunday of August.
People greet each other on this day and exchange gifts, wrist bands, etc. It began in a humble manner however the event has now been largely commercialized. Various companies manufacture greeting cards and gifts for the occassion.
