Bhubaneswar: The Special Squad of Bhubaneswar UPD on Tuesday arrested four members of a gang which was involved in a series of vehicle lifting cases in different parts of Odisha.

The accused have been identified as Padma Lochan Naik (29) of Odagaon, Nayagarh, Kalpataru Jena (29) of Tigiria, Cuttack, Muna Barik (25) of Athagarh and Santosh Kumar Sahu of Dhenkanal.

The police recovered three cars – a Swift DZire car, an Innova and an Indigo from their possession apart from two motorbikes. A stolen mobile phone and a 9 mm pistol were also seized from them.

The case pertains to the attempted kidnapping of Siba Sundar Das of IRC village who was abducted by this gang on June 7 from Nayapalli area. The kidnappers led by Naik took Das in his Creta vehicle and another stolen Innova till Vani Vihar where both the vehicles met with an accident.

The gang abandoned the vehicles and the abductee and fled from the spot. Das filed a complaint with Nayapalli police in this connection. The case was assigned to the Special Squad which arrested the accused persons on Tuesday.

According to the police, the gang is involved in at least half a dozen of car-lifting crimes in Cuttack, Khurda and Bhubaneswar. The four accused have been produced in a local court which remanded them in judicial custody.

A search has been launched to nab the other members of the gang.
