Bhubaneswar: As the State Government has geared up for the paddy procurement during the Kharif followed by Rabi, Odisha Cooperation Minister today announced that they have set a target of procuring 55 lakh metric tonnes this year while the figure may increase going by the future need of the hour and for the sake of extending support to the farmers.

Talking to media at the State Secretariat here, Odisha Cooperation Minister Surya Narayan Patro said, “In every district, the concerned District Collector is the chairman of the Procurement Committee. Along with the Collectors, the committee also includes our Cooperation Department’s Additional Registrar. Both of them share the same power for the procurement purpose.”

He informed, “The paddy is procured by Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society. If paddy procurement will not be done properly at the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society (PACS), the District Collector has been empowered to enter into the society, they can see the accounts, if warranted can take action against the erring officials.”

“This year the paddy procurement target is 55 lakh metric tones (MTs. Last year the target was 49 lakh metric tonnes (MTs).” He informed further.

The Cooperation Minister also stated, “The target of 55 lakh MTs is not the highest. Whatever amount sold by the farmers will be purchased. Even a farmer selling one sack of paddy will also be purchased by us while procuring both Kharif and Rabi paddy.”
