Bhubaneswar: It is appalling to note that 351 students, hailing from the different technical institutions, have been shockingly arrested for their alleged involvement in various crimes across Odisha. This has been revealed in Odisha Assembly on Monday (December 11, 2017).

In response to a question asked by senior BJD MLA Dr Raseswari Panigrahi to the Odisha Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, the written answer details on the figures since 2014 till date and also stresses on proper counselling to the vulnerable engineering students.

Replying to the MLA’s question, specifically on measures being taken to dissuade those students from the criminal mindset, the Chief Minister assured in writing that State Government has been taking steps for counselling the technical students against such anti-soicial modus operandi and keep they at bay from such criminal vulnerability.

One would be aghast to know that Odisha capital city based technical institutions have earned a dubious distinction as 79 students pursuing technical courses here were booked for criminal activities in 2014, 41 students were arrested in 2015, 67 in 2016 and more shockingly 75 till November 30, 2017, as per the written answer tabled in the Assembly.

On the contrary, Cuttack city under the Twin City Commissionerate Police has comparatively no such cases in 2014 and 2015 while only one student has been booked in 2016 and two students till November 11, 2017.

While Dhenkanal district has awfully added to its tally 37 such cases till November 11, 2017, no such cases booked in 2014 and 2015 while in 2016 a single case has been booked.

Even though Khorda district has registered no such cases till November 30, 2017, four cases were booked in 2014, nil in 2015 while 25 technical students have been booked for their alleged involvement in criminal activities in 2016.
