Kendrapara: New Year celebrations turned tragic to a group of picnickers after the boat they were travelling on capsized in river Mahanadi near Hukitola village of Kendrapara district on Wednesday.

The ten deceased persons have been identified as Prabhati Swain, Ishaan Dhalei, Sushree Pallavi Swain, Anu Tarai, Sai Tarai, Debasis Sahoo, Debasmita Pani, Rojalin Sahoo and Dhanu Sahoo and Subhashree Sahoo.

Reportedly, the mishap occurred when a picnic party of around 55 persons from Hasina village of Jagatsinghpur were returning from Hukitola Lighthouse. Ten persons were killed in the incident.

It was locals who rushed for rescue of the boat passengers as, being a remote area, fire brigade was not able to arrive at the spot on time. The presence of crocodiles in the area may pose as a hurdle for the rescue operations.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed his deep concern over the incident. He had instructed Kendrapara district administration and ODRAF to expedite the rescue operation.
