Bhubaneswar: Considering heavy inflow of water into Hirakud Reservoir, the authorities decided to open 16 gates of the dam today at 11.30 am. The process began 20 minutes behind schedule and three gates were opened in the first phase.

Phase-by-phase 16 gates were opened and flood water was released. The decision was taken keeping in view the downstream situation and Khairmal flow of 3.8 lakh cusec at 7am today. The authorities want to maintain the reservoir at about 619-620 feet on 21st August.

“The flood in the downstream is moderate and we do not want to heighten it. Flood control is the main objective of Hirakud Dam. Meanwhile, more rain is expected in Mahanadi basin over the next 48 hours. More gates might be opened depending on the situation," informed PK Jena Water Resources Secretary.

On Wedensday, sluice Gate No.7 was opened for few hours by Dam authorities to release the season's first flood water.
