Berhampur: Thirteen minors, including eight rape survivors and a few orphans, managed to escape their shelter home at Goshani Nuagaon of Ganjam district. They flung a broken wall and made use of the darkness to escape in wee hours of Tuesday.
The girls belonged to Utkal Balashram and were housed in it for various reasons from being ostracized and abandoned by families to rendered homeless after being orphaned.
As per reports, the girls made use of the broken wall behind the shelter home’s main building which neither had proper lighting nor was covered by any CCTV cameras. At about 1 am on Tuesday the girls made an escape.
Superintendent of the Balasharam Sasmitarani Padhi said, “All girls were in their respective beds when checked last night. Today morning I noticed their absence and immediately notified Childline, Child Welfare Committee and Police station.”
Speaking on the matter Berhampur Sub-Collector Shinde Dattatraya Bhausaheb said,” We have received information about the girls' presence in Bhubaneswar. In collaboration with the Commissionerate Police, we are trying to locate the girls to rescue them.” He added that once the girls are safely back, they will investigate the matter and take necessary action against those found guilty of security lapse.
