Bhubaneswar: There are 128 cold storages for the benefits of both the farmers and consumers of Odisha while 48 cold storages are functioning for the long-term preservation of fruit and vegetables.
This has been informed in the Assembly by Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment Minister Arun Kumar Sahoo.
Replying separately to the two queries made by BJD MLA Badri Narayan Patra and Congress MLA Suresh Chandra Routray, the Minister apprised the House that 22 cold storages out of the total 128 are of the State Government while 106 cold storages are private.
The Minister informed that approval was accorded for the construction of 28 private cold storages in the previous stint of the State Government (2014-19). Till date, 21 cold storages have been completed and are functional following which the storage capacity has been increased to 95600 metric tonnes (MT). Similarly, construction of 7 more private cold storages is underway.
With regard to the long-term preservation of fruit and vegetables, the Minister apprised the members of the House that 48 cold storages are functional now in the State and their total capacity is 2,27,880 metric tonnes (MT). Vegetables like potato, carrot and chilly are preserved in these cold storages. Some of them are also storing apple and tamarind.
The Minister further informed the House that 7 more cold storages will be functional in the current year.
