Bhubaneswar: As Jammu and Kashmir limped back to normalcy on Friday, people were seen on the streets heading towards mosques for Friday prayers. However, the local administration and security forces are on high alert to prevent any form of protests.
Amidst the uneasy calm in the volatile region, the Centre is likely to appoint a Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir soon. According to sources, retired IPS officers Vijay Kumar and Dineshwar Sharma are top contenders for the post of lieutenant governor of J&K Union Territory.
Kumar is currently the advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Satya Pal Malik. He holds several key portfolios such as Home, Forest, Ecology & Environment, Health & Medical Education, Youth Services & Sports, Hospitality & Protocol, Civil Aviation, Estates and Information.
Kumar is a 1975-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer. He headed the STF which gunned down forest brigand and sandal wood & ivory smuggler Veerappan. Kumar is known for being an anti-naxal expert. His experience ranges from jungle warfare and security detail to counter-insurgency.
