Former Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj Passes Away

Bhubaneswar: Senior BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj passed away tuesday night. She was 67.  Swaraj was critically sick and suffered a major cardiac arrest while being shifted to AIIMS, New Delhi.

She is survived by her husband Swaraj Kaushal and daughter Bansuri. A pall of gloom descended after the news of her demise spread. A horde of BJP leaders rushed to AIIMS after receiving the message.

Swaraj did not contest the recently held Lok Sabha elections in which the party won with a massive majority. Last November, she had announced she would not contest the general elections.

She was elected seven times as a Member of Parliament and three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. At the age of 25 in 1977, she became the youngest cabinet minister of Indian state of Haryana. She also served as 5th Chief Minister of Delhi from 13 October 1998 to 3 December 1998.

She was elected to 12th Lok Sabha from South Delhi Parliamentary constituency. Under the Prime Minstership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, she was sworn in as Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting with additional charge of the Ministry of Telecommunications.
